Physical Exams: What to Expect

A comprehensive physical exam is a key part of keeping your pet healthy. Here are the common sections of a routine check-up:

History

Your veterinarian will ask questions about your pet’s health history. Vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and body weight are recorded. Any changes in these may indicate health issues.

Heart and Lungs

Using a stethoscope, your veterinarian listens for abnormalities in your pet’s heart and lung function. Early signs of heart disease are often detected during annual exams.

Skin and Coat

The skin is the body’s largest organ and reflects overall health. Your pet’s coat and skin are examined for parasites, wounds, tumors, or other concerns.

Palpation

Your veterinarian uses hands and fingers to feel the abdomen, joints, muscles, and lymph nodes, checking for irregularities in internal organs or musculoskeletal health.

Eyes

Eye exams can reveal conditions such as anemia, infections, jaundice, glaucoma, or ulcers. Inner structures of the eye are carefully inspected for early warning signs.

Ears

Pets that shake their heads, scratch, or have a foul odor may have an ear infection. Your veterinarian visually checks the ear canals for inflammation or other problems.

Nose

Your pet’s nose is examined for abnormal discharge, color changes, texture, moisture, or shape to detect potential health issues.
