Diagnostic Imaging Telemedicine

Diagnostic Imaging Telemedicine - doctors reviewing imaging screen

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine provides the ability to transmit diagnostic images such as radiographs, ultrasound images, cytology, photographs and case information over ordinary phone lines to board certified specialists. The specialists consult with the Georgetown Animal Clinic's veterinarians regarding what is seen and how it should be managed.

How does telemedicine work?

A high-resolution camera or scanner is used to input images into a computer. These images are then uploaded to the internet or sent directly to a specialist's computer. The specialist is then able to provide us with a second opinion and fax back the results within 24 hours.

Why do we use telemedicine?

The most important reason we use telemedicine is that it increases the level of care we can provide to our patients. The specialists are able to confirm a diagnosis, help make a difficult diagnosis and make recommendations in terms of further testing or treatment. Therefore, telemedicine consultation provides us the ability to give our clients the most information and as many options as possible for their beloved pets.
This service also saves many of our clients the time and costs of seeking a second opinion.

What specialists does Georgetown Animal Clinic use?

We send our radiographs and ultrasonic images to DVM Insight group located in San Diego, California.  This group of radiologists is headed by Dr. Matt Wright, a board certified veterinary radiologist and digital imaging consultant. Any echocardiograms or specialized cardiac diagnostics that we perform are sent to VetMed, a group of specialists located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Dr. Larry Tilley, the head cardiologist is a specialist in small animal internal medicine and former professor at the Ontario Veterinary College at Guelph University.
